Cat CPR:
Everybody knows you can do CPR on humans, but did you
know that you can also perform this life-saving technique on your
kitty? Due the the cat's small size, it can be difficult to do, but
it might just save your cat's life, and is worth knowing about. Here
is the basic technique:
- Place the cat on its right side.
- Spread your fingers and the palm of your hand
on the cat's chest.
- Apply rhythmic, smooth compressions that will
move the chest about .7 inches, but not cause internal injury.
Press once every second for half a minute.
- Stop and check for a heartbeat.
- If no response, repeat the procedure for
another half a minute, the perform artificial respiration (see
below) for about a minute.
- Stop and check again for heartbeat and
breathing.
- If neither is present, continue.
- If only heartbeat is present, continue
artificial respiration.
- GET VETERINARY HELP ASAP!!
Artificial Respiration:
- Remove cat's collar if present and wipe away
any saliva, vomit or blood.
- Pull the tongue forward.
- Place the cat on its side.
- Put one hand over cat's mouth to keep it
closed.
- Take a deep breath and strongly blow into
kitty's nostrils for about three seconds, until you feel
resistance, or see the chest rise.
